Weekly Spartan Blog: August 29, 2013

Spartan PRIDE
Supporting our school community core values.

Remarks from the opening assembly with students on Wednesday, August 28th

We are off to a great start!  Spearfish Middle School kicked off the school year with a welcome back celebration.  The event included the student council as emcees, a student speaker in Conner Spears, remarks by Principal Baier , a teacher flash mob dance and a video slideshow.

Our theme for the school year is tied to the ultimate question that we ALL must answer on the journey of life;  Who am I?  This question is very personal and can only be answered by one asking the question.   Our school theme titled, “RUN YOUR OWN RACE,” suggests that we're all required to run the race.  What the title doesn't communicate is that we’re all in this together.  The school community shares the same purpose;  LEARNING,  Student learning and staff learning alike.

The great thing about a new school year is that is represents a fresh start.  Race begins today.  The STARTING line is the only decision you completely control. Today is the day to cross the line and get in the race.  I shared with students that talent alone won’t get the to college, the scholarship or a high school diploma for that matter.   It takes effort, hard work and perseverance.   Each of us needs to decide right here today that everyday is about excellence in everything we do.  In order for this to happen we need to agree to play by the same basic rules and hold each other to a high standard.

Let all of us be guided by our core values of PRIDE:  P for Preparedness, R for Respect, I for  Integrity, D for Determination and E for Excellence.    If we are going to be a school community that thrives and excels, we’ve got to do it together.   We believe in each and every one of you.  You are capable of  achieving excellence if you’re willing to work hard, support one another and partner with your teachers.

When I look at the many faces our students, I see the future of our community, state and our great nation.  I see computer programmers, software developers, engineers, authors, teachers, mechanics, machine operators, doctors, lawyers, business owners, building contractors, electricians, plumbers, scientists, health care workers, hotel and restaurant professionals and much much more.  To be prepared for the career of your choice, it is important to balance the fun of being in middle school with the importance of getting the work done.  Your grades matter, Classes you take matter.   Showing up on time matters, Relationships you develop matter,

How will you respond to the challenge put out their by Conner today?   Are you committed to excellence for yourself and the Spearfish Middle School Community?  If so…we must work together, treat each other with respect and make a commitment to help each other along the way.

Welcome Back!  Make it a great year.
